Libraries showcase cutting-edge furniture and technology

January 6th, 2010

The University Libraries are showcasing brand-new collaborative study spaces, a one-semester trial preparing us for the new Mary Idema Pew Library and Learning Information Commons design conversations. The architect firm SHW Group, Steelcase Corporation, and Custer Office all have contributed to this project.

New group study spaces on the main floor of Zumberge library feature Steelcase’s cutting-edge media:scape space, an interactive, high-technology work environment that allows multiple students to plug into a visual display, to switch control between users, and to collaborate on digital projects. It’s a new way for groups to work, think, and create together using an innovative meld of modern furniture with new technology.

The libraries are also showcasing new furniture at Seidman House, a new study carrel design on the 3rd floor of Zumberge Library (west side of the building), and new group study furniture in the Zumberge cafe.

Please send comments about the new spaces to Lynell De Wind at dewindl@gvsu.edu.

The large microfilm cabinet that dominated the Steelcase Library reference area has found a new home. The microfilm, however, didn’t move too far–it’s now located in the automated retrieval system.

Plans are in the works for more student work areas in the wide open space where the microfilm cabinet once stood. And if you miss the cabinet, its individual components were moved to the fourth floor of Zumberge.
