Congratulations to Andrew Kiste!

November 26th, 2007

Andrew Kiste, one of our reference triage student workers, had an article published in the premiere issue of Orlando Attractions Magazine. This magazine showcases different Orlando area theme parks and attractions, and is published six times annually. Andrew is a self-professed Disney fanatic and also wanted to be part of the magazine community. Since he enjoys running, it was only logical for him to write about his experiences during the 2007 Walt Disney World Marathon this past January. His feature article is entitled, “Marathon with the Mouse – A Dream Come True for Disney Runners” and is accompanied by pictures. Andrew said, “When I began writing my article, I was just stoked that something that I wrote would be published in a magazine that millions of people may be reading!” He says that fact that he was paid was an added bonus!

Congratulations, Andrew!!!

Congratulations to Ann Hayward!

Grand Valley State University recently celebrated its fourteenth annual Shakespeare Festival, which included a student competition for creative, critical, historical or scholarly projects relating to Shakespeare, his times, and the Renaissance (1450-1650 AD). This year, for the first time, the festival committee set up a separate category for work done by graduate students. “From Mourning to Morning: Love and Grief in John Donne’s ‘A Nocturnal upon Saint Lucy’s Day, Being the Shortest Day,’” written by Library Acquisitions Associate Ann Hayward, was awarded first prize.

In Memoriam: Pat Parker

November 7th, 2007

To paraphrase George Orwell, everyone is unique, but some are more unique than others. One of those “somes” was Pat Parker.

She served as the GVSU librarian for law, legal studies, and criminal justice from 2000 until this past Halloween, when she passed away after a long, uncomplaining battle with cancer. We already miss her quick wit and infectious laughter, her gregariousness, her passion for the library profession and knowledge of legal resources, and her inability (or was it a refusal?) to acquire a midwestern accent.

Pat was a native of the Boston area, as anyone could tell after she spoke a few words. She earned her library degree from Simmons College, and worked in college, engineering, and law libraries out east and in the Grand Rapids area before coming to GVSU. She was an active member of the GVSU community and served on several committees, including the Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center Advisory Committee and the GVSU Graduate Council. Pat also served as a mediator for the Dispute Resolution Center of West Michigan, and was active in library organizations on the local, state, and national level.

Besides her GVSU library family, Pat is survived by her husband John Parker of Georgetown Township, her daughter Allison (John) DeMarais, son Sean (Stephanie), one grandson, Iainn Parker, and several brothers and sisters. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
